Before & After: Stunning Interior Design Project in Paradise Valley, AZ

When my clients set out to purchase a second home for their family they had already fallen in love with Arizona, and specifically the Paradise Valley area. Paradise Valley is a community best known for its luxurious residential and resort properties, high-end restaurants and shopping, and its affluent but down-to-earth community. It is perfect for this family's lifestyle. They have two school-aged kids and the cutest pup. The home was only partially finished by the builder when they purchased the home - which created a nice opportunity to customize to their taste before they even moved in. As soon as they could close on the property, they contacted me for help in personalizing the remainder of the finishes, decor, furnishings, and outdoor spaces, and to create the elegantly casual lifestyle they are drawn to in living in Paradise Valley.

Follow along with me while I guide you through the before and after scenes, and the process and transformation of their elegantly casual dining room.

Before

The beautiful smokey-toned European Oak flooring that had been installed throughout the home was differentiated in the dining room by a herringbone pattern. Black framed Euroline Steel Sliding Doors lead to the front courtyard and allow for organic mountain views. The unfinished wood Cathedral beams provided a rich backdrop for the creation of this room.

GOALS:

Color and finish detail, lighting, wall and flooring decor, and furnishings that fit the kid-friendly and multi-use lifestyle of the home. They wanted a space to freely entertain the kids and guests including a large dining table to seat 10 for formal dinners, that easily could transform into a billiards table for parties and entertainment. The homeowners are mostly in the home during the children's school year, and away during the hot summer months. They needed the home to fit a lock and leave lifestyle.

The Process

The motif was designed for a “desert elegant” feel. The homeowners expressed their favorite tones as earthy blues and natural desert colors. She also wanted a touch of glamour along with the practical so we brought in an antique brass finish and sparkle in the lighting.

One of the homeowner’s wishes was to have original art throughout the home, so we started the creative process by commissioning a local fine artist, Nancy Ngo, NGO Fine Art, who I have worked with in the past. After sourcing samples for colors and materials to use in the space, we worked with Nancy to establish style and color of the abstract contemporary pieces she created specifically for this room.

The furnishings were created with function in mind. We designed a specialty dining table top to fit directly on the billiards table created for this family. The upholstery for the chairs was selected specifically for its durability as a performance fabric, which will outlast stains and wear and tear. The cabinet was customized to hold the billiard accessories and equipment out of the way. And the window coverings include both electronic drapes and shades that open and close at the touch of a button.

The After Reveal

Functional for family and friends entertaining. Formal meals can take place, but as soon as the tabletop is removed, the room turns into a billiards room complete with a cabinet to hold the accessories. Easy to move the custom designed succulent centerpiece and replaced when needed. Light and bright, with the ceiling whitewash that added to the casual appeal.

The Transformation

Elegantly designed and family friendly. No need to worry about the kids running through, or opening up the Euroline doors for an evening breeze. Closing everything up to leave for the summer is as easy as a push of a button!
