Week 4! Spring 2020 One Room Challenge Project - Outdoor Island BBQ and Bar

Week 4 of the One Room Challenge® is underway! See my One Room Challenge posts for Week 2 and Week 3 for progress up to this point. Better Homes & Gardens is the official media sponsor of the ORC.

The build out of the BBQ is done, and new appliances installed. We are now focusing on the finishing touches including paint, tile installation, and lighting.

Appliances

One of the most interesting parts of this project is finding a local shop that could make us an Argentenian Gaucho Grill. It was an exciting find, that a local company, Arizona BBQ Outfitters, creates these enormous grills, perfect for entertaining! The “Green Egg” that was in the original design, has found a replacement…there was not enough room for both, and the appeal of the Gaucho was just too fun to pass up!

“Sometimes referred to as a Santa Maria Grill, an Argentinian Style Grill, or increasingly a Gaucho Grill (literally Cowboy Grill), these units have a pan or grate for charcoal in the bottom, and a movable cooking surface that can be dropped down for intense, high temperature grilling, or lifted up for a smokier, low and slow style of cooking.” The Spruce, Eats; An Introduction to Argentenian Gaucho Style Grills.

We were first introduced to this outdoor cooking style while visiting family in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It’s a wonderful way to grill for a crowd, and provides its own entertainment appeal.

We spent the week of New Years at a beautiful beach house in a quaint resort beach town called Juquehy Beach, which is located partway between Sao Paulo and Rio De Janeiro. The home was outfitted with everything you’d ever need, but when coming in from the beach, the patio was the draw for everyone. It included dining and seating areas draped in white canopies, and that Gaucho Grill we cooked almost every meal with.

Authentic Recipe

Traditionally, the Gaucho Grill is used to cook everything from meats, to toasting breads and cheeses. But you can use it to grill almost anything, including desserts. Hot coals, or specialty wood can be used depending on the flavor you’re after.

The creators of the our custom Gaucho Grill offered designs for personalizing the grill. We included the state of Arizona flag motif on ours. We couldn’t wait to try the grill, so as soon as it was installed it got a trial run. The recipe below for Missy’s Famous Ribeye was created by our good friend and avid hobby chef.
