Week 7 & 8! Spring 2020 One Room Challenge Project - Outdoor Island BBQ and Bar - Final Reveal!

Week 7 and 8 of the One Room Challenge® and finally finished! See my One Room Challenge posts for Week 2 and Week 3 and Week 4 for progress up to this point. This was such an amazing opportunity, and not to mention fun challenge, and an excuse to work on my own yard project. Better Homes & Gardens is the official media sponsor of the ORC.

The BBQ Island and Bar

The island and bar turned out extremely well. We did need to change the tile on the bar, the deep navy blue I had originally ordered was out of stock. However I am thrilled with the result of the all travertine and limestone bar top and surround!

The Theme

We wanted a backyard entertaining oasis casual enough for our family but also a great entertaining spot for friends. The bar is located right next to the pool, which is ideal for hot summer evenings…BBQ’ing and taking a cool dip in the pool. Patio furniture is also arranged in the area for drinks and conversation. I am glad we made room for extra umbrellas considering we couldn’t add the ramada.

The Reveal!

I added color through decor, the bar has such a neutral backdrop, it’s almost desert tones on it’s own. Color is called for, for any party or gathering, and this is no exception. The banana palms and ficus we’ve planted surrounding the bar will take some time to grow. But once they are tall there will be plenty of shade and color!

A Brazilian/Bahama ambiance takes over in our little outdoor getaway. A favorite cocktail we learned on our trip to Brazil is almost their version of a margarita (I say almost, because it’s really not a margarita, but they serve it on the beach in Brazil and is one of our favorite memories)! The caipirinha (pronounced kai-purr-REEN-yah) is the national drink of Brazil. You should try it sometime, I’ve included the recipe below…

Caipirinha

Yield:1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lime

  • 1/2 to 2 teaspoons superfine sugar (to taste)

  • 2 ounces Cachaça (a good one is Leblon Cachaca)

  • Garnish: lime wheel

Take these steps to create:

1) Cut the lime into small wedges

2) Add lime and sugar together in the glass and muddle well with a muddler

3) Add some ice

4) Top with Cachaca

5) Garnish with lime wheel

6) Enjoy!
