Love the Luxury Hotel Look? Here's How to Get That at Home...

What's your favorite type of hotel while traveling? Is it a large and luxurious resort with a grand entrance? Or is it a boutique hotel with local flair? Maybe you love fresh flower bouquets and a bottle of wine waiting for you on the table. Is the location beach, or maybe it's a city or countryside atmosphere. I often ask my clients for their preference in architecture and surroundings in any resorts or hotels they've stayed in because it helps to get a feel of their comfort zone. This is only one aspect of finding someone's preference in design, but I find it extremely helpful to know.

When transforming your home into a space that provides inspiration, energy, or relaxation, here are some tips that I find helpful…

1. Make a Grand Entrance

If you love a large, luxury resort, your space may be inspired to have a grand entrance. A two story foyer with an ornate, sparkling chandelier, classical or modern artwork, picturesque windows and views, and rich multicolored rugs with antique flair. If  you prefer this style, opulence brings you energy, which is, in part, your underlying comfort zone.

2. Create Communal Seating Areas

Communal seating areas are common in a boutique setting. The entrance is filled with casual, yet quality pieces in area rugs, colorful artwork and fabrics, bench and settee seating,  and quaint side tables you can imagine resting your cup of tea or cocktail on. It is subtly lit, and you can imagine having quiet conversation, but also inviting guests and family for a lively and casual dinner party. Homey and casual is your underlying mood lifter.

3. Makeover the Primary Suite

Knowing the space dynamic that brings you the most satisfaction will help you in deciding the type of architecture and decor to build into your lifestyle. A good place to test this theory is the primary suite. Often, more than one person will live in this suite so a mix of styles is not only ideal, but also necessary. What better space to combine the opulence of a grand resort, with the comfort and character of a boutique chateau? A grand upholstered headboard, large picturesque windows, beautiful ornate lighting, with the underlying elements of aged wood, soft, buttery fabrics, with woven area rugs to cushion your feet. Can't you just envision this dreamy room?

4. Repaint in a Rich Palette

Hotels and resorts, opulent or quaint, can be designed with a rich, contrasting palette. Rich tones draw you into the space, and if the right colors are used you'll want to kick off your shoes and stay awhile. Navys and greens are relaxation colors, and preferred by many. Reds and yellows are invigorating, and appropriate in lively spaces.

5. Add Wonder to the Windows

In creating your ideal space I never forget to utilize window coverings.  Custom coverings can set the mood, including light and bright sheers that let the outdoors in, or dark and heavy fabrics to block out the noise and bustle of the outdoors for a good night's rest.

6. Layer Lots of Lighting

I like to layer lighting to create the ideal mood. An ornate, focal chandelier can take your room from "ok" to spectacular. Wall sconces, art and display lighting, task, and of course ambient lighting all serve their purpose. Use whiter ambient for bright and airy spaces, art and display lighting to show off those classical or modern art pieces, and task lighting for when you crawl into bed with a good book.

7. Adorn the Walls with Artwork

Adding artwork and mirrors with specialty frames can offer a touch of whimsy or drama, sophistication or casual playfulness. Your dining space may call for some drama for formal holiday dinner parties, while the kitchen and family room might be casual spaces for informal family time.

Creating your own personalized space should first start with the elements that bring out your internal energy. An informative clue is the type of resort or hotel you most feel drawn to stay in while traveling. The colors, patterns, types of materials, lightness or darkness, casual or opulent, or a mix of both!
