What to Splurge On & Where to Save When Buying Home Furnishings & Decor

How exciting to be starting an entire home decorating project! You've finally moved into your new space, or newly renovated space and are ready to create the comfort your surroundings call for. It's easy to get overwhelmed with all that there is to offer...online, in local showrooms, what you see that inspires you on Pinterest. But some simple guidelines will help make it clear on what direction you should follow, that will keep you in a reasonable budget, and how you can invest strategically.

Tip #1: Spend the Money on High-Traffic Items

The furnishings you, your guests, and family touch most often will be your best investment items, and also where you should put most of your budget. These are your high-traffic, daily use items such as living room area rugs, kitchen and dining chairs, upholstery like sofas and lounge chairs. You definitely get what you pay for on these! Worried about the kids and dogs? All the better reasons to invest in durable performance fabrics, and well constructed pieces that are easy to clean, and will not break down with daily use.

Tip #2: Splurge on Show Stopping Details

When we say "design is in the details" we mean the items that make your space fabulous! Is your fireplace the focal? Add some extra detail to the mantle, or a beautiful commissioned art piece above. Do you have a great room or dining room that can use some livening up? Add a spectacular chandelier. Is the shower the first thing you see in your bathroom? Create a tile mural, and use extra luxurious fixtures and features. Even one stand-out element in the room will take it from just "ok" to fabulous. Splurge on the focal, and go easy on the rest...you won't regret your decision.

Tip #3: Save on Literally Everything Else

Anything not in the above categories of high traffic areas, or a show stopping focal, you can go a little less expensive on. I mean a "little" less expensive, haha. You still want quality and function, so plan to spend less, but not a bargain from a third party online website promising the world for $10. When we choose the less expensive items for our clients, they are quality items that honor the design, and won't break down or look worn with occasional use. These could include artwork in secondary rooms, lighting, area rugs, or even an armchair in the corner of a guest room.
