How to Create a Timeless Look with Holiday Decor

I appreciate holiday decor, most meant to set a mood. Whether colorful and whimsical, or subtle and sultry...it's meant to create an excitement for the season. But, there are times you need the mood to match the environment. Ever walk into a jewelry store and the tree decor is, well, kinda cheap looking and juvenile? Or attend a formal event where the holiday decor doesn't match the formal surroundings. Setting the mood of elegance and sophistication is not a difficult task, here’s how…

The quality and cohesiveness of your decor are priority for creating elegance and beauty. This doesn't mean it all has to come with a heavy price tag, but the way it is put together in order to flow. Repeating color schemes and patterns will help to elevate the level of sophistication in your decor.

Below are 5 tips that are essential in curating a collection of holiday decor that is gorgeous, classic, and can be enjoyed year after year.

1. Pick a Palette

I often pick a set of neutrals as a backdrop to the pops of color I enjoy. Holiday neutrals include metallics such as silver, gold, copper,  and crystals. This is an area to spend a bit more for ornaments,  and swags. Beautiful detail in these tones create sparkle, and offset beautiful white holiday lights.

2. Mix Up the Materials

A variety of materials will add interest in texture, color and pattern. Stay away from anything plastic, and stick to metal,  glass, durable fabrics, and elements of nature and intersperse them around your home. Repeat some of the materials in different configurations, such as a mantle swag and a console centerpiece. Adding a touch of whimsy, again repeated in several areas, will add to a fun atmosphere without removing the sophistication.

3. Rely on Reflection

I also like to add elements that reflect light,  such as a large gilded mirror above a mantel or on a wall which reflect twinkling lights of a Christmas tree, or lit candles across the room. This will create the look of a grand room, and create an elegant mood.

4. Invest in a Look that will Last

I like to collect quality pieces while traveling, or adding to my collection from local shops each year. Ornaments that don't come in bulk, but are each unique and beautiful on their own. Make it a point to collect in memories of the day, or for someone special.

5. Respect the Rule of 3

To contribute to the elevated aesthetic, I like to group items in 3's and 5's, in varying heights to create  interesting vignettes on shelves, coffee tables,  consoles , and table centerpieces. This also a great way to display collections, using pretty coffee table books and small decorative boxes to vary heights.
