The Top 3 Things Pet Owners Should Consider When Renovating or Redesigning
There’s no question that pets can be a source of immense joy. However, they can sometimes be one big, hairy, unpredictable mess! Today we’re sharing 3 tips to help you pet-proof your home…
Tip 1: Select Performance Fabrics Whenever Possible
Upholstered furniture made with performance fabrics is a pet-friendly option. Performance fabrics are durable and tightly woven, making them stain and snag-resistant. They also stand up to sharp claws and make it easy to clean the shedding. Check out my Top 5 ways to Use Performance Fabrics in Your Home.
If you’re keeping your existing furniture, consider purchasing washable slipcovers that you can frequently change without constantly investing in new furniture.
Tip 2: Choose Water-Resistant Flooring
Pets often come with unexpected accidents, so choose durable flooring options for all rooms pets are allowed in. Luxury Vinyl Plank or Tile (LVP/LVT) has a water-resistant top wear layer and will wear well with pets.
Other options include Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) and Stone Plastic Composite (SPC). They are waterproof, and the planks lock together as a “floating floor.” That means they aren’t permanently affixed to the subfloor, so excess moisture doesn’t penetrate through to the subflooring.
Tip 3: Proactively Protect Your Floors
Hardwood floors can run in the mid-to-high-end price range and do not always play nice with pets. Over time, once-pristine flooring can show signs of scratches and worn-down finishes.
For that reason, use indoor-outdoor rugs as an additional layer of floor protection to help surfaces withstand the wear and tear of pet activities. Some rugs are also made to be machine-washable and can withstand spills, dander, dirt, and pet accidents. Durable flooring is also an excellent option if you have kids playing in high-traffic areas. Here are 3 durable finishes for kids and pets.
