How to Design an Irresistible Outdoor Retreat

Well it't that time of year here in Arizona! Time to enjoy the great outdoors - on your patio that is! I always enjoy these cool evenings, the glass wall completely open to the backyard, where friends and family are enjoying the living room like seating areas, or the quite bistro nook perfect for a glass of wine and quiet conversation. My favorite spot, though, is the built in BBQ, and outdoor bar and kitchen with bistro lights for the best kind of ambiance for entertaining!

Step 1: Carefully Consider How the Space will be Used

Connecting the outdoors and indoors of your home creates a unique opportunity to transform your home into an environment for cherished memories. I like to wake up in the morning, make my coffee, let my cockapoo (Hippie) out and sit with hubby on the patio soaking in the cool morning desert breeze. It just sets my day in the best way.

Step 2: Start Layering from the Ground Up

When creating an outdoor space, I like to break up the patio and yard into zones, much like your indoor space. I take the colors you love,  mix in the textures and fabrics and frames that are durable and work well with our desert environment, and create your areas for comfort, relaxation, entertaining  and the family, for solo book reading and reflection with a glass of wine. Sunset dinner outside anyone?

Step 3: Opt for Durable Outdoor Furniture

Using materials to withstand our Arizona environment is ideal when creating longevity in the the design of your outdoor space. Traditional wicker and teak, though the most lovely materials, will only be happy under a deep patio here. The sun, rain and fluctuation in humidity make for a hard environment for these traditional materials. I like to use a mix of metals (wrought iron), resin wicker (has the look of traditional wicker but will not split and warp), concrete and travertine (modeled for a rustic effect) and to top it all of with the softness and durability of Sunbrella Fabric.

Step 4: Pick Performance Fabrics for Quality and Comfort

Creating your outdoor sanctuary or entertaining space will require the added softness of cushions, pillows,  and even a throw for those cool evening and mornings. I love to create a. variety of textures and colors, a mix of organic elements with thee vibrance of sunset colors that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. There are many brands now that offer the durability for outdoor spaces, but I love the tried and true Sunbrella I've used for many years.

Step 5: Add Some Naturally Beautiful Finishing Touches

For the finishing touches add an outdoor rug to your outdoor kitchen and bar space, colorful pillows to your loungers, and a sweet throw to your custom daybed swing. All to help create your Irresistible Outdoor Retreat!
