How to Design a Gorgeous Outdoor Retreat
An outdoor living space is more than a separate space from your home, but rather an extension of your home. It can be as simple or elaborate as you want by easily making room for seating, to providing an all-inclusive entertaining space. Much of what makes the interior of your home comfortable and an easy place to relax with the family, can be extended into your outdoor space. Add a functional kitchen, a fireplace for a relaxation zone, and a yard game or outdoor theatre for family and friends' entertainment.
I have 5 easy steps for you for creating an outdoor space that takes your family and friends outside for tranquility, family connection, and entertainment.
Step 1: Imagine How You Would Love to Use the Space
Imagine how you would love to use your outdoor space. Do you love to host gatherings? Imagine how you would like to use your space for get-togethers with family and friends. How about maximizing your "stay-cation?" Creating a space that is a close second to your favorite resort makes this a no-brainer! Adding a pool with travertine paver edges, a pergola to house a hot tub , and other entertaining areas will make your vacation at home an exciting choice if you dream of quality family time, outdoor dining, storytelling and smores by the fire, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Did you know that spending time outside really does benefit your health? Time spent outside contributes to reducing stress, boosting your immune system, and decreasing symptoms of depression. Take a minute to jot down some ideas for your outdoor space before moving on to the next step.
Step 2: Plan to Layer the Space from the Ground Up
To create a comfortable outdoor space, start by creating some "rooms" outside just as you would inside. Use a surface material such as grass (or turf), pavers, or soft crushed granite as your base. If appropriate add an outdoor area rug, add furniture on top of that, and then some cushions made from pretty fabrics.
Step 3: Consider Outdoor Furniture
If you live in a sunny climate, such as Arizona, there are some outdoor furniture materials you'll want to avoid. Using wicker, jute, wood and rattan will not hold up to the wear and tear of our harsh sun and monsoon rains. You'll want to use furnishings created with non-rust steel, resin, and polyethylene all of which have year round use, are UV Resistant, and water resistant.
Step 4: Embrace Outdoor Fabrics for Comfort
Cozy up your seating areas using fabrics and textiles like cushions, throw pillows, and even outdoor blankets in the winter. Use a strong outdoor fabric with a soft hand such as Sunbrella(rm) for its durable use in color, and gentle weave.
We work closely with our workroom and selected manufacturers to assist you in creating an inviting outdoor space, selecting new pieces or creating custom pieces that fit your needs and outdoor lifestyle.
Step 5: Add Some Beautiful Final Touches
Add some small, final touches for impact such as garden clippings in a beautiful vase, inspiring cookbook for the outdoor kitchen, and invigorating drinks in the outdoor refrigerator.
